Specific goals/objectives:

  • read and understand Simple English Wikipedia entries for veganism and vegetarianism
  • understand the difference between veganism and vegetarianism, based on these entries

Materials needed for activity: (check the following)

  • internet access  _projector _ speakers _ printout
  • BYOD (Bring Your Own Device – smartphone, tablet)
  • other: Read & Write Google Chrome extension for Ss who would like the texts read aloud

Time: 45 minutes

Overview: Read short entries and fill in the table.

Activity 1

  1. Pre-teach the root ‘veg’ and the suffixes ‘ism’ and ‘(i)an’.
  2. Ss read the introduction section of the Simple English Wikipedia entry for ‘veganism’ and answer questions 1-4.
  3. Check and discuss answers.

Activity 2

  1. Ss read the ‘Why are people vegan?’ section of the Simple English Wikipedia entry for ‘veganism’ and answer questions 1-3.
  2. Check and discuss answers. For Q3, discuss alternatives to ‘for instance’ and elicit other useful markers for examples.

Activity 3

  1. Ss read the Simple English Wikipedia entry for ‘vegetarianism’ and answer the questions.
  2. Possible follow up: which lifestyle seems more feasible? Moral?

Vegan? Vegetarian? What’s the difference?

 

By the end of this LO, you should be able to:

  • read and understand Simple English Wikipedia entries for veganism and vegetarianism
  • understand the difference between veganism and vegetarianism, based on these entries

 

This LO is based on the Simple English Wikipedia entry for veganism and vegetarianism.

 

Read the introduction and answer the following:

 

  1. What do vegans do?
  2. What do vegans think/feel?
  3. Is there a connection between what vegans do and think/feel?
  4.  Why are both of these included in this description?

 

Read through the section called ‘Why are people vegan?’ and answer the following:

 

  1. What question is being answered in this paragraph?
  2. What explanations are mentioned?
  3. Why does the author use ‘for instance’?

 

Read the Simple English Wikipedia entry about vegetarianism.

 

 

  • What is the main difference between vegans and vegetarians?
  • Mark the foods allowed in vegan and vegetarian diets.
