Level: all levels from A2

Target audience: anyone who wants to test their knowledge about the vegan diet

General goals/objectives: to help students learn about veganism in a gamified manner

Specific goals/objectives: to review basic vocabulary and concepts about veganism

Materials needed for activity:

a mobile phone, tablet, or computer with internet access for the students, and a computer with an internet connection + a projector, for the teacher.

Time: 20 minutes

Procedure: First the Kahoot! activity familiarizes them with the dietary restrictions of vegans (and their beliefs) and then the ensuing discussion prompts them to generalize from what they have just learnt to the idea that vegans, ideologically, do not want to use any products derived from animals (whether you kill the animals for their products or not).  They are opposed  to using any animal products and to the animal farm industry that produced them.

Activity 1 Kahoot!

Click here and it will take you to the game website.  The first screen gives the URL (kahoot.it) that students need to go to on their phones, tablets, or computers, and a game PIN number.  Once students have inputted that information, they are asked for a game nickname.  When they input that you will see their nicknames on your screen.  When they have all registered, you can press Start, and the game will begin.  On their devices students will only see the answer options (not what is shown on the screen). Students have 30 seconds to answer the questions.  Whomever answers correctly the fastest gets most points.  Between questions you can see the distribution of right answers (to each question) and which students have been the fastest to answer correctly.

The game creates a competitive fun atmosphere in the class.

Activity 2

After having played, ask the students what they believe the principle behind veganism is.

Guide the discussion so as to draw the overarching principle(s) guiding the vegan lifestyle.

This should nicely lead into the reading of the Simple Wikipedia Veganism entry and activity.
