Overview: Watch a film review of Inhale; do a vocabulary exercise; discuss the film with guided questions; read a film review about the film; write a response to discussion questions about the film; discuss oral discussion questions as a class.

Activity 1

  1. Watch the film review (before or after reviewing the idiom chart).
  2. Read the film review and answer the comprehension questions.
  3. Write responses to the discussion questions.
  4. Discuss the oral discussion questions.

Speaking  

Discuss the following points:

Setting: Where does the story take place? What are the differences between the two countries in which the movie takes place?

How can these two countries be representative of the rest of the world?

Plot: How does the story open? What does the opening reveal about the development of the plot? Where in the plot is the climax reached?  How does the story end?

Characters: Who are the main characters in the story? What role do the secondary characters play?   

Conflict: What options do the parents face? What do they choose? What conflicts do these choices raise in the movie? How are they solved? Do the secondary characters face conflicts as well? What are they and how do they get resolved?

Theme: What theme does the movie discuss? Is this a common theme? What are the boundaries that make the theme legal? When does it become illegal / unethical?

Understanding reviews:

Give an example of a positive review and one of a negative review. What aspects of the movie did the reviewers depend on in their reviews?

(Cast performance – effects – plot – camera – sound / music – ending…)

 

Writing – Discussion

 

At the end of the movie, the father decides not to take the child’s life to save his daughter’s. Do you agree with the father’s decision?

Write a short paragraph in defense of his decision.

Write another paragraph showing why his decision was wrong.
