Target audience: all college level students

General goals/objectives: speaking and writing

Specific goals/objectives:

  1. Preparing an argument
  2. Speaking in a debate
  3. Writing your opinion

Materials needed for activity: (check the following)

X internet access  X projector _ speakers _ printout X BYOD (Bring Your Own Device – smartphone, tablet)

Time: 45 + 30 minutes

Overview: Class holds a debate based on readings about innovation

Activity 1 – Debate: Has the innovation cup run dry?

Divide the class in half and each group prepares their side of the debate (Agree/ disagree) with arguments to support their claim, based on the readings, and using the vocabulary of innovation and language of debate

Activity 2: Writing to the Forum

Write 1 -3 grammatically-correct sentence(s) on the forum:In your opinion, has the innovation cup run dry?
Review the sentences as a class and consider – capital letters, punctuation, subject-verb agreement

Production/ Speaking Sustained monologue presenting a case (e.g., in a debate) Can develop a clear argument, expanding and supporting his/her points of view at some length with subsidiary points and relevant examples (B1+)

 

Production/Writing Overall written production Can write straightforward connected texts on a range of familiar topics within his/her field of interest and/or expertise by linking a series of shorter discrete elements into a linear sequence (adapted B1)
Reports and essays Can summarize, report and give his/her opinion about accumulated factual information on familiar routine and non-routine matters within his/her field with some confidence (B1+)
